The popularly and well-known long, low silhouette, ever-alert expression, and bold, vivacious personality of the Dachshund have made them a superstar of the canine kingdom. Dachshunds come in two sizes and three coat types of various colors and patterns. The Dachshund family, with their unmistakable long-backed body, little legs, and big personality is truly an icon of purebred dogdom. Dachshunds can be standard-sized (usually 16 to 32 pounds) or miniature (11 pounds or under), and come in one of three coat types: smooth, wirehaired, or longhaired. Dachshunds aren't built for distance running, leaping, or strenuous swimming, but otherwise, these tireless hounds are game for anything. Smart and vigilant, with a big-dog bark, they make fine watchdogs. Bred to be independent hunters of dangerous prey, they can be brave to the point of rashness, but their endearing nature and unique look have won millions of hearts all over the world, including ours!

AFFECTIONATE WITH FAMILY
Category: Lovey-Dovey
Minis are an affectionate breed that is likely to be more so with family members or other people they know well. Some breeds can be aloof with everyone but their owner, while other breeds treat everyone they know like their best friend.
GOOD WITH YOUNG CHILDREN
Category: Good With Children
A minis level of tolerance and patience with children's behavior and overall family-friendly nature is well embraced. Dogs should always be supervised around young children or children of any age who have little exposure to dogs.
GOOD WITH OTHER DOGS
Category: Good With Other Dogs
Dachshunds are generally friendly a breed toward other dogs. Dogs should always be supervised for interactions and introductions with other dogs, but some breeds are innately more likely to get along with other dogs, both at home and in public.
SHEDDING LEVEL
Moderate: Easy Maintenance
Except for long-haired minis, you can expect little to no fur and hair to be left behind. Breeds with high shedding will need to be brushed more frequently, are more likely to trigger certain types of allergies, and are more likely to require more consistent vacuuming and lint-rolling.
COAT GROOMING FREQUENCY
Category: Bi-Weekly
Though we recommend weekly bathing and grooming, bi-weekly works too! Minis are more low maintenance as compared to larger dogs. Consider how much time, patience, and budget you have for this type of care when looking at the grooming effort needed. All breeds require regular nail trimming and ear inspections.
DROOLING LEVEL
Category: Less Likely to Drool
Miniature Dachshunds are less likely to drool, even while drinking water! If you're a neat freak, dogs that can leave ropes of slobber on your arm or big wet spots on your clothes may not be the right choice for you. Minis are the opposite! They are less likely to leave messes around the house!
COAT TYPES
Dachshund coats come in many different types. Each coat type comes with different grooming needs, allergen potential, and shedding levels. You may also just prefer the look or feel of certain coat types over others when choosing a mini.
COAT LENGTH
Some long-haired dachshunds can be trimmed short, but this will require additional upkeep to maintain. Short-haired doxies require little to no coat maintenance while wire-haired may require minimal maintenance.
OPENNESS TO STRANGERS
Category: I LOVE EVERYONE!
Stranger Danger! Minis tend to LOVE EVERYONE, even strangers! Be cautious when taking your doxie to a public place. Some breeds will be reserved or cautious around all strangers, regardless of the location, while other breeds will be happy to meet a new human whenever one is around!
PLAYFULNESS LEVEL
Category: When You Want To Play
Miniature Dachshunds like to play very frequently! Some doxies will continue wanting to play tug-of-war or fetch well into their adult years, while others will be happy to just relax on the couch with you most of the time.
WATCHDOG/PROTECTIVE NATURE
Category: What's Mine Is Yours
Dachshunds are more likely to react to any potential threat, whether it's the garage opening or a knock on the door. However, these breeds are likely to warm to strangers who enter the house and are accepted by their families.
ADAPTABILITY LEVEL
Category: Highly Adaptable
Dachshunds handle change very well. This can include changes in living conditions, noise, weather, daily schedule, and other variations in day-to-day life.
TRAINABILITY LEVEL
Category: Eager to Please
Minis are very eager to please whether that is playing or training. Mini Doxies just want to make their owner proud!
ENERGY LEVEL
Category: Moderate Energy
Minis will spend their time running, jumping, and playing throughout the day. Of course, with the intermittent nap here and there. Providing toys will keep your pet entertained while you are away.
BARKING LEVEL
Category: Alert, Very Vocal (especially while playing!)
Minis LOVE to play and tend to be vocal while doing so. This is how they express their happiness and excitement. This breed vocalizes, whether it's with barks or howls.
MENTAL STIMULATION NEEDS
Category: Needs a Job or Activity
Doxies love training! Give them a project and some reiteration, you can expect your pup to be very smart. Doxies thrive on decision-making, problem-solving, and concentration. Without the brain exercise they need, they'll create their projects to keep their minds busy -- and they probably won't be the kind of projects you'd like
